Domingo Penalver represents aaduna’s soul. He was born on a Sunday on a plantation owned by Penalver in pre-Castro Havana, Cuba. The son of an African and mixed-race (African and Chinese) parents, Domingo’s style was suave, sophisticated, humble, and proud. A man’s man, Domingo enjoyed hand rolled cigars and rich, strong Cuban coffee. Eventually settling in Tampa, Florida, he married an African American woman and they produced several children, some who became multi-lingual. Domingo’s spirit represents the complexities of diversity and multiculturalism that aaduna seeks to explore through words and images. The Gallery that bears his name will present work that brings the observer to other cultures; different perspectives of living and existing, and enables the viewer to better understand the intricacies that shape and mold each of us in the world we elect to exist and prosper in.

Iconoclastic, fiercely independent, willing to set and bear responsibility for his actions, futuristic in outlook, and strong willed, Lou Borders pushed the status quo and made opportunity a reality for those who did not have it. A businessman and entrepreneur, labor organizer, and professional golfer back in the day of pre-Woods, this dignified African American embodied what this gallery seeks to do…present images that challenge form, observation, and monolithic thinking. In the style of “Uncle Lou”, the gallery will attempt to pursue its artistic goals with integrity; maintain a sense of purpose, and “by the sweat of [our] brow” make contributions to the artistic landscape.
